A digital code's format label decides what plays on your TV, and the rules differ by platform and studio. This guide is the short version of everything we have learned selling thousands of 4K and HD codes.
Vudu keeps formats separate. An HDX code gives HDX; a UHD code gives UHD. Redeeming a UHD code for a title you own in HDX upgrades it. Vudu supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on compatible devices, which is why collectors prefer it for 4K.
Apple stores one version of each film and plays the best quality your device supports. An HD code for a title Apple has in 4K plays in 4K on a 4K Apple TV or compatible smart TV. Apple upgrades most catalog titles to 4K over time at no charge.
Movies Anywhere passes the format through to each retailer according to the studio's rights, and this is where the exceptions live.
| Studio | Where to redeem | Vudu | Apple TV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal, Warner Bros, Sony | Movies Anywhere | 4K | 4K |
| Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars | Movies Anywhere | 4K | HD (Apple often upgrades later) |
| Disney iTunes 4K codes | Apple, then syncs | 4K via Movies Anywhere | 4K |
| 20th Century "through iTunes" | Apple first | 4K after transfer | 4K |
| Paramount, Lionsgate | Vudu or Apple directly | As labelled | As labelled |
Every listing title states the platform, and the description notes any exception, so read both before buying if a specific platform in 4K matters to you.
